An original 1981 Flamengo shirt, a gift from Diogo, and the story of one of the greatest club sides football has ever produced.
There are football shirts, and then there are football shirts with a story.
This is one of them.
Recently, our friend Diogo returned to Zico at The Barras with an extraordinary gift: an original Flamengo shirt from 1981.

Diogo had found the shirt at his parents’ home in Rio de Janeiro and brought it back to Scotland especially for us. It is now part of the collection at Zico Fashion Boutique, where it will take pride of place alongside the football memorabilia that helps tell the stories behind the game.
And there could hardly be a more appropriate shirt for Zico.
1981: the year Flamengo conquered the world
To understand why this shirt is special, you have to understand what Flamengo achieved in 1981.
This was the great Flamengo side built around Zico, Júnior, Leandro, Nunes, Adílio, Andrade, Tita, Lico, Mozer and Raul, managed by Paulo César Carpegiani.

The team didn’t simply win trophies. It became one of the defining sides of its generation.
The year culminated in Flamengo becoming champions of South America and then champions of the world.
First came the Copa Libertadores.
Flamengo faced Chilean side Cobreloa in a fiercely contested final. After a 2–1 victory at the Maracanã and a 1–0 defeat in Santiago, a deciding third match was required.
It was played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo on 23 November 1981.
Zico produced exactly the performance expected of the great number 10.
Two goals. A 2–0 victory. Flamengo were champions of South America.
Zico finished the Libertadores as the competition’s leading scorer with 11 goals.
But there was still one enormous challenge ahead.
Liverpool.

Flamengo v Liverpool — Tokyo, 13 December 1981
The European champions arrived in Japan with one of the strongest club teams in the world.
Liverpool had just won the European Cup and included players such as Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Alan Kennedy.

Flamengo were not intimidated.
On 13 December 1981, in front of more than 62,000 people at Tokyo’s National Stadium, Flamengo produced one of the great performances in the history of the Intercontinental Cup.
Flamengo 3–0 Liverpool.
Nunes scored twice.
Adílio scored the other.
And Zico was at the heart of all three goals. The official Flamengo account records that he supplied the passes for both of Nunes’ goals and his free-kick led to Adílio’s goal from the rebound.
The entire game was effectively settled before half-time.
Flamengo were world champions.

A shirt from that extraordinary generation
That is what makes Diogo’s gift particularly significant.
This isn’t simply an old Flamengo shirt.
It represents the period when Zico was the centrepiece of a team that conquered Brazil, South America and ultimately the world.
The 1981 side has subsequently become part of football folklore.
The official Flamengo history describes the December 1981 victory over Liverpool as the culmination of an extraordinary month which also included the Libertadores and the Campeonato Carioca.
And the players themselves have continued to describe the group as an exceptionally close team. Flamengo has recorded reunions of Zico, Júnior, Adílio, Andrade, Mozer and Nunes recalling the experiences of that remarkable period.
That is why we don’t see pieces like this simply as merchandise.
They are pieces of football history.

From Rio to Glasgow
There is also something particularly fitting about the journey this shirt has made.
It began in Rio de Janeiro.
Decades later, Diogo found it among his family’s belongings and brought it back to Scotland.
Now it sits at Zico Fashion Boutique at The Barras in Glasgow.
A shirt from Flamengo’s greatest era, associated with the club’s greatest player, has travelled thousands of miles from Brazil and found a new home in a football shop in Glasgow.
That is exactly the sort of story we want Zico to tell.
Because the things we collect aren’t just clothes.
They are memories, people, places and stories.
And sometimes, if we’re lucky, a piece of history turns up at the door.
Thank you to Diogo for bringing this incredible 1981 Flamengo shirt back to Zico.
It will take pride of place.
